If you are comparing BridgeDummy vs BBO, you are probably deciding where to spend your practice time. I built BridgeDummy, so read this knowing that. I have kept every fact checkable.
As of August 2026, these two products do different jobs. Bridge Base Online (BBO) is the largest online bridge platform, with around 11.6 million monthly visits. It is where most people play live bridge, enter ACBL-sanctioned tournaments, and watch Vugraph. BridgeDummy is the training app I built to score your bidding and opening lead decisions with double-dummy analysis across thousands of simulated deals.
Quick verdict: Use BBO to play bridge against humans, earn ACBL masterpoints, and watch top-level events. Use BridgeDummy to train your bidding and opening leads with scored puzzles graded by double-dummy analysis. BBO has no opening lead trainer or bidding quiz. BridgeDummy has no live play. Most serious players should use both.

How training works on each platform
BBO was built for playing bridge. Training is a secondary feature. Bridge Master, created by Fred Gitelman, presents declarer-play problems where the correct line always makes the contract. If you play incorrectly, the defense finds the killing return. There are 180 free problems across five difficulty levels and about 657 total. Extra sets cost BB$0.25 per 30-minute rental. Bridge Master teaches real declarer technique, but it covers one dimension of the game: card play.
BBO also launched the BBO Trainer app around 2025. It is a separate mobile app (iOS and Android only, no web version) with a Daily Challenge, Mini Bridge for beginners, Free Deals, and an AI Challenge mode. The free tier gives you four deals per day plus the Daily Challenge. Premium costs $9.99 per month and adds unlimited deals, full stats, and leaderboards. Prices change; check the vendor's pricing page.
I designed BridgeDummy around a different idea. Every puzzle scores your decision against double-dummy analysis across 1,000+ simulated deals that match the auction. Instead of a plain right or wrong, you see how every alternative compares, ranked 1 to 5 stars. The puzzles cover bidding and opening leads, in both matchpoints and IMPs, always from the South seat.
Bidding and lead practice
BBO has no standalone bidding practice mode. You can practice by playing robot games, but there is no quiz format, no scoring of individual bids, and no way to isolate bidding decisions from the rest of the hand. The robots include Basic GIB, Advanced GIB, GIBBO (a neural-network upgrade launched December 2025), Argine, and ACBL Ben. Robot quality varies. GIB bidding has been described as "about C-player level" on BridgeWinners, though BBO reports that GIBBO outperformed the old GIB in its testing.
BridgeDummy isolates both decisions and scores them. The bidding puzzles give you a hand and an auction, then score your bid against every alternative with double-dummy evaluation over 1,000+ deals. The lead puzzles show you an auction and your hand, you pick a lead, and every card is scored by double-dummy analysis across layouts matching the auction. Both run entirely in the browser.
Opening lead practice is the biggest gap in BBO's training tools. No other major platform offers a dedicated, scored lead trainer either. I built the lead puzzles because I was tired of guessing whether my lead was right. Now I can check, against the simulation, in two seconds.
Bridge Master vs BridgeDummy's declarer tools
Bridge Master is BBO's strongest training feature. The hand-crafted problems and the "perfect defense" mechanic teach real technique: squeezes, endplays, and deceptive plays all appear at the higher levels. For structured declarer-play practice with curated problems, Bridge Master is proven and has been around for over two decades.
BridgeDummy's Declarer Trainer is a free, unlimited mode where you play declarer against adaptive defense powered by DDS compiled to WebAssembly in your browser. It uses random deals rather than curated problems, so it is less structured than Bridge Master. BridgeDummy also has suit combinations for single-suit technique, including a custom solver that analyzes any card combination on demand.
Bridge Master tests complete declarer play on carefully authored problems. BridgeDummy is more flexible: random deals, any suit combination you want. For pure declarer training with curated content, Bridge Master has the edge. For volume and variety, BridgeDummy gives you more range.
Pricing and free tier
BBO's free tier is generous for playing. Social tables, Vugraph, basic Bridge Master levels, and daily robot games cost nothing. BBO Premium costs $5.99 per month for the first year, with an extra month free when you join on the web, then $9.99 per month after that. Tournament entry costs BB$, roughly $0.25 to $5 per event. The BBO Trainer app is a separate $9.99 per month subscription, separate from BBO Premium.
BridgeDummy's free tier gives you the Declarer Trainer, the Analyzer, seven bridge calculators, and all learn and guide content at no cost. The diamond system (50 free per month, 75 welcome bonus) covers about 50 practice puzzles at 1 diamond each, or 5 daily challenges per month on a free account. Paid plans run $4.99 to $13.99 per month, with annual billing saving 33%. A full year of Pro costs about the same as one private bridge lesson. See pricing for current details.
If you want to play bridge online, BBO's free tier covers it. If you want dedicated training tools, BridgeDummy's puzzles go deeper on the practice side.
Where BBO is better
- Live play against humans. BBO is the default platform for online bridge. If you want to play real people, this is where they are. I am not trying to compete with that.
- ACBL masterpoints. BBO hosts ACBL-sanctioned online tournaments. If you need masterpoints, there is no alternative.
- Player base. Around 11.6 million monthly visits means you can always find a game at any hour.
- Vugraph. Watch world-class bridge live with expert commentary.
- Bridge Master. 657 curated declarer-play problems with a decades-long track record. BridgeDummy's declarer tools are newer and less structured.
Where BridgeDummy is better
- Opening lead training. Lead puzzles score every card in your hand with double-dummy analysis across layouts matching the auction. BBO has nothing comparable, and neither does any other major platform.
- Bidding training. Bidding puzzles score every call with double-dummy contract evaluation over 1,000+ deals. BBO has no bidding quiz or isolated bidding practice.
- Granular feedback. Every puzzle option is scored 1-5 stars based on double-dummy analysis across 1,000+ deals. You see exactly how much each decision costs. Bridge Master uses correct/incorrect; BBO Trainer uses percentile ranking.
- Custom simulations. Build your own deal constraints, compare contracts and leads, and share results with a link. BBO has nothing like this.
- Free calculators. Suit break odds, scoring, hand probability, game and slam odds, and a "What Should I Bid" tool at /bridge-calculators.
Can you use both?
Yes. I recommend it. BBO is where you play: live games, tournaments, masterpoints, Vugraph. BridgeDummy is where you train: scored puzzles and simulations that show you exactly how much each decision costs in matchpoints or IMPs.
A practical workflow: warm up with a few lead puzzles or bidding puzzles, then play your tournament session on BBO. Use the Daily Challenge or Weekly League on BridgeDummy to stay sharp between sessions. Check your progress to see which areas need the most work: lead MP, lead IMP, bidding MP, or bidding IMP.
Bottom line
BBO is the default platform for playing bridge online. It has the players, the tournaments, the masterpoints, and the Vugraph. BridgeDummy fills the training gaps BBO does not cover: scored bidding puzzles, dedicated opening lead puzzles, and custom simulations. Play on BBO, train on BridgeDummy.
